African leaders set for emergency meeting after Niger coup – BBC News
Leaders from West Africa are set to meet at an emergency summit, after Niger’s army took power in a coup.
It comes after the EU suspended all security cooperation with the nation, and the US declared its "unflagging support" for ousted president Mohamed Bazoum - seen as a key Western ally in the fight against Islamist militants.
On Friday the head of the presidential guards unit Gen Abdourahmane Tchiani declared himself Niger's new leader, and there are concerns about which countries he will align with. The leader of Russia's Wagner mercenary group Yevgeny Prigozhin has reportedly described the coup as a triumph.

There's currently a huge demand across the world for lithium and it's Zimbabwe that has Africa's largest lithium reserve.
Efforts to develop more renewable energy sources means there’s a growing demand for batteries – particularly in the car industry, as it shifts towards electric vehicles.
A key component of batteries is lithium and African countries are set to play a huge role in this vital supply chain.
Zimbabwe has Africa's largest lithium reserve and hopes to become the world's largest exporters of lithium.
In July 2023, a Chinese mining company completed the $300m construction of a lithium mine in Zimbabwe.
But with elections approaching, how important will this key resource be for Zimbabwe’s economy and the president's international relationships?
The BBC's Nyasha Michelle explains.

Through WhatsApp voice notes, videos, and texts, this documentary reveals their abusive ordeals, and exposes the tactics of agents that traffic and then abandon them. The investigation also examines the poverty and desperation that leads young people to seek opportunities in the Middle East, and the weak justice system that often allows their employers to abuse them with impunity.
Intimate testimonies reveal widespread accounts of sexual and physical abuse, or worse, of African workers - and the film follows the work of an extraordinary network of women working across three continents fighting to bring them home, often against impossible odds.
